We’re thrilled to share our partnership with EigenLayer to support EigenDA, an AVS on EigenLayer providing low-cost, hyperscale data availability to rollups, on our RaaS platform. 

What is EigenDA?

EigenDA is an alternative data availability solution made by EigenLabs and built on top of EigenLayer, which stores rollup transactions until their computed state is finalized on the rollup bridge.

The core insight of EigenDA is that the problem of data availability (DA) does not require independent consensus to solve. Ethereum DA, the previous status quo, creates high costs and low throughput, as each node on the network is forced to store redundant data.

With EigenDA, by leveraging a decentralized transient data store for Ethereum rollups, Ethereum can handle coordination, while EigenDA operators take care of data storage directly. 

This approach gives EigenDA the ability to scale linearly, making it:

  • Scalable: EigenDA write throughput scales linearly with number of operators. At launch EigenDA provided 10 MB/s of write throughput.

  • Secure: EigenDA is decentralized, and made up of hundreds of operators registered in EigenLayer whose delegated stake imposes an economic cost to misbehavior. To do so, EigenDA offers a dual quorum staking utility which features ETH as the first quorum and EIGEN as the second quorum. This means that EIGEN holders (in addition to ETH holders) are able to stake to EigenDA operators, adding more security to the network. Custom quorums that enable EigenDA rollups to stake their own custom tokens to secure blobs are also coming soon.

  • Decentralized: EigenDA's design is inspired by Danksharding, which promises to scale Ethereum-native DA beyond EIP-4844. EigenDA blob writes are registered with contracts on Ethereum, which natively subject operators to certain slashing risks. Ethereum L2s using EigenDA avoid any trust assumption on another chain's light client, which can be fooled by dishonest validator sets.

Put into Practice

In practice, EigenDA makes it possible to build blazing-fast applications. Since integrating with their technology, three of our partners have already chosen to build with EigenDA:

Treasure: Treasure Chain is the decentralized game console and home base for all games within its ecosystem, and will eventually serve as the settlement layer for a sprawling ecosystem of app-specific Infinity Chain L3s.

Edgeless: Edgeless is the first ever crypto ecosystem without application layer fees, built as an L2 powered by Arbitrum Nitro with EigenDA underneath.

Olive: Olive is the go-to chain for gasless transactions, with native staking and re-staking yield, offering a variety of leveraged yield farming and lending products.

By leveraging EigenDA along with Caldera’s rollup infrastructure, these teams are setting a new standard for user experience – a true testament to its quality as a DA solution.
